Church Online Reputation Management

September 8, 2009 · Filed Under Marketing and Advertising

Just like businesses, churches are finding out that proactively managing their online reputation can make a great deal of sense.

Although a church may not be attempting to answer potential critics, it doesn’t mean that the talk is not occurring. The value is in getting out in front of what is being said so that you can shape the discussion. Just shifting the focus to correctly reflect an event or statement may be all it takes to avoid a growing misconception.

One of the first steps is to sign up for a “Google Alerts” account and receive notifications on phrases like your church name, your pastor’s name, etc. to see what is being said online about your church. If negatives occur, you can contribute to the conversation to try and right the record if there is misinformation out there.

It is very rewarding to also see good dialogue occurring and it gives you an opportunity to leverage the positive for further outreach.

Managing your church’s online reputation does not have to take long. If you don’t, who will?
